On 14 October 2025, Microsoft ends regular support for Windows 10. After that, devices without an additional contract receive no more security updates. The computers keep running – but every newly discovered vulnerability stays open.
Why this is a real risk
Attackers deliberately wait for deadlines like this. Vulnerabilities fixed in Windows 11 can often be exploited on Windows 10 as well. A single unpatched computer on the network can be enough to bring malware into the entire company. In addition, many cyber insurers require up-to-date, supported systems.
Your options
- Upgrade to Windows 11. For devices that meet the requirements (including TPM 2.0 and a supported processor), the upgrade is free.
- Replace devices. Older computers often don’t meet the requirements. Replacing them is frequently worthwhile anyway, as new devices are faster and more efficient.
- Buy Extended Security Updates (ESU). Microsoft offers paid updates to businesses for a transition period. This buys time but doesn’t solve the problem permanently.
- Centralise workstations. With a terminal server, programs run centrally – so the workstations need less power.
How to proceed in an orderly way
- Create an inventory: which devices run which system, and which meet the Windows 11 requirements?
- Check your software: does your business software run on Windows 11? Ask the vendor.
- Plan and budget: decide on upgrade or replacement for each device.
- Switch over step by step: first a test device, then department by department – with a backup before each step.
- Dispose of old devices securely: reliably wipe storage media beforehand.
Conclusion
End of support is no reason to panic, but it is a reason to act. Planning now spreads the costs and avoids a last-minute rush. We are happy to handle inventory, planning and migration as part of our IT support.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using Windows 10 after end of support?
Technically yes, but without security updates the risk grows with every newly discovered vulnerability. For businesses it is not recommended.
How do I check whether a PC can run Windows 11?
With Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or as part of an inventory. Key requirements include TPM 2.0 and the processor.
What happens to my programs during the upgrade?
As a rule, programs and data are kept. Still, always create a backup before upgrading and check your business software for compatibility.
